The Climate Action Toolkit
We put communities at the heart of climate action – so more people can enjoy the benefits it brings. Benefits like new jobs, warmer homes and lower energy bills. And better health, access to nature, and protection from floods and heatwaves.Â
We boost organisations and projects whose work is rooted in communities. Innovators who use their deep local knowledge to meet the needs of local people, and grow local economies. That are brave enough to take on the inter-linked challenges our communities face, and to work for a fairer zero carbon future. Â
Ashden supports councils and community groups, schools and small businesses, and the larger organisations they partner with. Because they can deliver the inclusive, place-based climate action the UK needs. Whether that means solutions to fuel poverty, solar power for homes in low-income communities, or parks that improve people’s health and soak up dangerous downpours. Â
Winners of the annual Ashden Awards play a key role in our UK work. We accelerate their growth – and share their stories to spark wider system change.
Our workÂ
We bring resources, connections, insights and publicity to Ashden Award winners and other organisations taking part in our projects and programmes. This helps them boost their impact, scale up and build new partnerships. We also bring organisations together. This can mean fostering holistic solutions for a particular place, or sharing insights and best practice. Â
We also tell their stories to drive system change – showcasing proven solutions to funders, politicians and other influential audiences. This fuels nationwide progress on the biggest climate challenges. Issues like unlocking finance, securing strong and consistent policies, building the low-carbon workforce, and boosting public support for climate action. Â
Our tools to create impact range from learning networks to original films, reports, events and our annual awards.Â
Three powerful programmes’
The Energy Learning Network
The Energy Learning Network powers forward community energy in every UK nation – for a clean energy future that builds local wealth and engagement across society. Its impact includes enabling 35 paid mentors to support new or existing projects, making the community energy movement more effective and inclusive. Â
Sharing Spaces
The Sharing Spaces project has empowered communities to create climate action hubs in public buildings, often with support from their local authority. Running in a dozen London boroughs, these hubs have generated energy-saving advice sessions, tree-planting schemes, reuse and repair workshops, and many more engaging activities focused on local needs.Â
Resilient Roots
Resilient Roots help councils, community groups and non-profit organisations deliver nature-based solutions to the impacts of climate change. Its workshops, events, mentorships and insights are helping communities prepare for and respond to growing challenges like flooding and extreme heat. And as the programme develops, it will inspire policymakers to deliver greater ambition and impact.’
Where are we powering climate action?
Low-carbon community energy
Community energy can lower fuel bills and emissions – and helps more people join the journey to zero.Â
Nature and adaptation
Growing resilience and better health, with nature-based solution
In our cities and beyond, wild spaces like parks and wetlands improve health and protect us from extreme weather.Â
Retrofit
Creating warm, energy-efficient homes
Our work tackles fuel poverty, boosts skills and training, and brings modern heating and energy generation to more properties. Â
Low-carbon schools
Let’s Go Zero is the campaign for all schools, colleges and nurseries to be zero carbon by 2030.
Citizen engagement
Ashden supports councils and others to deliver climate projects hand-in-hand with communities – so more people benefit from the low-carbon transition.
